Cosmetic and beauty endorsements are usually reserved for A-list celebrities, however makeup brand CoverGirl have turned the tables, announcing their latest ambassador; a 17-year-old high school senior named James Charles.

Fellow face of CoverGirl and pop sensation Katy Perry broke the news on her Instagram account, posting a picture with Charles after a photo shoot together.

Perry captioned the happy snap ‘Just wrapped another great @COVERGIRL shoot. Honored to have the pleasure to announce the very first COVERBOY, James Charles! Follow him @JCharlesBeauty! #COVERGIRLJames #glam’

Having quickly gained a huge following on social media – 580,000+ Instagram followers – for his amazing makeup skills, the New York teenager recently grabbed our attention on Twitter last month, retaking his senior photos as he didn’t like the way the highlighter looked on his cheekbones originally.

In an interview with The New York Times, Mr Charles talks make up tips, gender identity and what it was like working with Katy Perry, gushing ‘It was the coolest surprise ever!’

She was so kind. We were posing for pictures together, and we were hugging each other, and she said: “I can feel you shaking. I’m just as nervous as you are.” To hear that someone at her level was just as nervous for a shoot as me calmed my nerves and put me in a place of “Oh, I can actually do this.”

With his Youtube channel sitting on a comfortable 80,000 subscribers, the talented teen told Cosmopolitan that his amazing looks have simply come down to practice and years of watching online tutorials, sharing ‘it’s all been through experimenting and figuring out what works for me.’

In an age where we’re finally starting to see some shift in the fashion and beauty world between the sexes, with the likes of Jayden Smith donning a skirt for Louis Vuitton, it’s great to see CoverGirl jumping on board to help break down gender barriers and stereotypes. I mean, who says we can’t ALL look this fabulous being ourselves?!
